Hi, my name is Yarrow.

I’m a writer, grief companion and tarot reader living on the East coast of Scotland.

I facilitate creative projects and gentle rituals for seasons of loss, make handmade textile magic and host the Grief Magic podcast. My wish is to change the culture around grief and death so that we can explore these experiences as gateways into a softer, more embodied life.

Rituals have been a big part of my life ever since I was a small child making altars with rocks and feathers I found roaming the small Northern German village in which I grew up. To this day, I love lighting candles, observing the seasons and making time for small pockets of creativity every day. Books have always held me through my hardest moments – I love getting lost in stories and appreciate how much narratives shape us. I keep a little library at home and love lending books to my friends that I think will support them through tough times too.

After many years of fast-paced city life I am now rooted in a small town by the sea where I sit by the same river every week. Grief work has found me through my own experiences of loss – an accident that left me with limited mobility, the deep solitude of lockdown, the death by suicide of my friend Frances and the sudden and unexplained death of my mum in the summer of 2024.

These losses have by no means made me an expert on grief, but they have made me someone who has been there. I know there is real beauty and resilience in mourning and that grief is just another form of love.

With all that is happening around us,

I think it is essential and revolutionary to grieve as much as we need to.

To me, meaning making is a magic skill that anyone can learn.

In the autumn of 2024 for example, I made a grief quilt for my sister from my mum’s bedding and one of her favorite dresses. I cried cutting into these precious materials that still smelled of her and found the process immensely healing. With my fingers running over the fabric, I received messages of love and connection that I then embroidered as a gift.

For me, there is something about mending and reclaiming materials that is deeply magical. I love feeling awe and playfulness through improvisation and see slow making processes as a beautiful devotional practice.

I have learned that grief can co-exist with

immense pleasure, joy and

an expansive sense of loving the world.

When I give it the space it deserves,

it becomes a portal into authentic faith

& embodied trust in benevolent forces all around me.

My background & identities

I am a white, neurodivergent, middle aged queer person with education and class priviledge and a working class background. I am polyamorous, live with some invisible physical disabilities and have no children.

My background weaves together creative writing, mythology, grief education and end of life care. I’m also a trained celebrant and have studied bodywork and movement practices, which is where the ritual and embodiment work comes from. You can find the full list of teachers and qualifications below.

My teachers & qualifications

The first person who taught me how to sew was my mum Marina. I consider myself a community taught writer, maker and tarot reader, having taken classes with wonderful folks like Heidi Parkes, Christi Johnson, Zak Foster, Nancy Antenucci, Alexis Cunningfolk, Sherry Lynn Wood, Julius Arthur, Melissa Word, Willemien de Villiers, Donna Watson and Maura Ambrose.

What guides my practice

I am excited about mystery, mortality, playfulness, liberatory movements, intersectional, restorative visions for justice, animism and somatic inquiry.

I understand that grief is always political and I’m trying my best to meet people with curiosity and openness, to share my privileges with others and to practice in a gentle, trauma informed way.

It’s important to note that I am a celebrant and creative practitioner, not a therapist.
